Rows

The sample rows are illustrations on this page only, and they are clearly fictional. The downloaded workbook ships blank on every tab.

One row per training phase: the phase name, what the trainee demonstrates, trainer and trainee initials, and the date it was completed.

Training phases
Water testing and test kit use
Reading and recording free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, CYA and combined chlorine with the kit the company uses.
Chemical dosing with the site calculators
Using the Fieldwynn pool chemical calculators to size a dose from a test reading, entering the pool volume and the reading, and recording the result before adding anything.
Equipment operation and inspection
Starting, stopping and inspecting the pump, filter, heater, salt cell (if present) and automation controller, including a filter pressure check and backwash or cleaning procedure.
Safety and chemical handling
PPE selection, chemical storage rules and spill response steps, all per the product labels the company stocks.
Customer communication and gate rules
Arrival protocol, gate and lock procedures, communicating with homeowners and property managers, leaving a service report, and handling complaints on site.
Route and documentation
Loading the truck to the route checklist, navigating the route in order, completing the service report or log for every stop, and filing it before leaving the last stop.
Supervised solo service day
Running a full route alone with the trainer available by phone, then reviewing every service report together at the end of the day.

These seven phases are sign-off headings, not a syllabus. The workbook teaches nothing and carries no rate, dose, mixing or handling instruction. Your own training program sets the content behind each heading.

What this training checklist is (and isn't)

This is a blank employer checklist, not a calculator: it computes nothing, scores nothing, and validates nothing. It records who was trained, on which phase, when, and who signed it off. The weekly pool maintenance checklist keeps a visit in order; this one trains the person running those visits.

The pattern twin in pest control is the pest control technician training record template, which tracks classroom and on-the-job hours per category toward a state pesticide applicator license. Pool uses phases instead of hour categories, and adds a certificate tracker for the CPO or state operator license.

Three grid tabs, plus a Read me:

  • Phase sign-off. One row per training phase: the phase name, what the trainee demonstrates, trainer and trainee initials, and the date it was completed.
  • Daily log. One row per training day: the date, the phase worked on, the hours, trainer and trainee initials, and any notes or stops covered.
  • Certificates. CPO, state operator license, or other credentials the trainee holds or is working toward: the credential, the issuing body, the number, the dates, and whether a copy is on file.

Seven training phases, each a sign-off heading:

  1. Water testing and test kit use. Reading and recording free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, CYA and combined chlorine with the kit the company uses.
  2. Chemical dosing with the site calculators. Using the Fieldwynn pool chemical calculators to size a dose from a test reading, entering the pool volume and the reading, and recording the result before adding anything.
  3. Equipment operation and inspection. Starting, stopping and inspecting the pump, filter, heater, salt cell (if present) and automation controller, including a filter pressure check and backwash or cleaning procedure.
  4. Safety and chemical handling. PPE selection, chemical storage rules and spill response steps, all per the product labels the company stocks.
  5. Customer communication and gate rules. Arrival protocol, gate and lock procedures, communicating with homeowners and property managers, leaving a service report, and handling complaints on site.
  6. Route and documentation. Loading the truck to the route checklist, navigating the route in order, completing the service report or log for every stop, and filing it before leaving the last stop.
  7. Supervised solo service day. Running a full route alone with the trainer available by phone, then reviewing every service report together at the end of the day.

These are phase names, not a syllabus. The workbook teaches nothing and carries no rate, dose, mixing or handling instruction.

MAHC record retention

The 2024 Model Aquatic Health Code (5th edition, section 6.1.3.6A (item 4)) states: "Procedures for the operator training course provider to maintain an individual's training and exam record for a minimum period of 5 years after the expiration of the individual's certificate." (Source.) The MAHC is a model code; the code your health department has adopted is the one that binds the site. Check your own program for the retention period that applies to you.

What this file holds:

  • A phase sign-off row for each training phase, with trainer and trainee initials and the date completed
  • A daily training log: date, phase, hours, initials, and notes or stops covered
  • A certificate tracker for CPO, state operator license, or other credentials
  • The seven training phases as sign-off headings, not a syllabus
  • A company header block filled once per workbook

Hiring and certification are separate questions. How to hire your first technician covers the hiring side, and the certified pool operator (CPO) hub covers the credential this checklist tracks.

The weekly checklist keeps a visit in order. This one trains the person running those visits. Seven phases from test kit to supervised solo, each signed off by the trainer and the trainee with initials and a date: that is the paper trail a pool service company keeps on a new hire. Download one Excel workbook per trainee, no signup, no email wall.

Seven phases, signed off in order

The Phase sign-off tab carries one row per training phase, and each row needs four things before the phase is done: the trainer’s initials, the trainee’s initials, the date, and an optional note. The seven phases run from the fundamentals to a full day alone:

Your own training program sets the content behind each heading.

A daily log and a certificate tracker

The Daily training log tab records each training day: the date, the phase worked on, the hours, trainer and trainee initials, and any notes or stops covered. The Certificates tab tracks the CPO or state operator license the trainee holds or is working toward: the credential, the issuing body, the certificate number, the dates, and whether a copy is on file.

The 2024 Model Aquatic Health Code (5th edition, section 6.1.3.6A) requires course providers to furnish certificate information including (item 4) “procedures for the operator training course provider to maintain an individual’s training and exam record for a minimum period of 5 years after the expiration of the individual’s certificate” (source). The MAHC is a model code; the code your health department has adopted is the one that binds the site. Check your own program for the retention period that applies to you.

Two documents, two jobs

The weekly pool maintenance checklist is a visit record: steps, readings, doses added, sign-off. This checklist is a training record: phases completed, who signed them off, and when. A tech who has only the weekly sheet has no signed record of the training behind it, and a company that has only the training checklist has no record of the visits. The two sit in the same filing cabinet but do different work.

The pattern twin in pest control is the pest control technician training record template, which tracks classroom and on-the-job hours per category toward a state pesticide applicator license. Pool uses phases instead of hour categories, and adds a certificate tracker for the CPO or state operator license.

For the hiring side of bringing on a new tech, the how to hire your first technician guide covers the process. For the credential this checklist tracks, the certified pool operator (CPO) hub covers the exam, the renewal and what the certificate means on a route.

Nothing you do on this page is saved to Fieldwynn: the workbook is a static file, the only copy is the one you download, and there is no rate, no dose, no mixing and no handling guidance anywhere in the file.

Frequently asked questions

What goes in a pool technician training checklist?
Seven sign-off phases, and each one gets the trainer's initials and the trainee's initials plus the date: water testing and test kit use, chemical dosing with the site calculators, equipment operation and inspection, safety and chemical handling, customer communication and gate rules, route and documentation, and a supervised solo service day. The workbook adds a daily training log for hours and a certificate tracker for the CPO or state operator license.
Does my state require a training checklist like this?
That depends on your state, your license class and the type of pool (residential versus commercial). This workbook reproduces no state's form and asserts nothing about yours. The 2024 Model Aquatic Health Code (section 6.1.3.6A) requires course providers to furnish certificate information including (item 4) 'procedures for the operator training course provider to maintain an individual's training and exam record for a minimum period of 5 years after the expiration of the individual's certificate,' but the MAHC is a model code: the code your health department has adopted is the one that binds the site.
Is this the same as the weekly pool maintenance checklist?
No, and keeping them apart is the point. The weekly pool maintenance checklist keeps a single visit in order: steps, readings, doses added, sign-off. This checklist trains the person who will run those visits: it tracks which training phases they completed, who signed them off, and when. A tech who has only the weekly sheet has no signed record of the training behind it.
Where do the seven training phases come from?
They are a practical progression from test kit to supervised solo, not a syllabus or a state requirement. Your own training program sets the content behind each heading. The workbook teaches nothing and carries no rate, dose, mixing or handling guidance.
