What is Route Density?
Route density is how tightly a service operator's stops cluster together — how many jobs a crew completes per route-day relative to the driving between them. Dense routes put more billable visits and fewer windshield hours into the same day, so the cost to serve each stop falls and the revenue per truck rises. It is the single lever that most separates a profitable route book from a busy-but-thin one, which is why buyers price a dense, geographically tight book above a scattered one of the same revenue.
Two operators can bill the same revenue and earn very different money from it, and route density is usually the reason. The operator whose stops sit a few minutes apart finishes more visits before the day runs out and burns less fuel and labor getting between them; the one whose jobs are scattered across a metro spends the day driving. The same crew, truck, and hours produce more billable work when the map is tight.
Density is why operators cluster new customers near existing ones rather than taking every job that calls, and why a focused neighborhood beats a thin spread across a whole county. You can raise it deliberately — group visits by area and day, hold a minimum stop count per route before adding a day, and price outlying jobs to cover their real drive cost.
It also shows up at sale. A buyer reading your book pays more for stops that are easy to keep serving — a dense, transferable route survives a change of owner; a scattered one leaks customers the moment the routing gets harder.
