Backflow Testing Pricing Calculator: How Much to Charge

Price an annual backflow test from your own numbers: per-assembly test fee, additional assemblies, filing fee pass-through, trip charge, re-test line and repair handoff.

Assembly test

What you charge for the first assembly on the property. Your number, not a market rate.

How many more assemblies on the same visit.

What you charge for each additional assembly.

Filing and trip

The water-authority fee, passed through at cost. It varies by jurisdiction; this page asserts no fee.

The flat charge for showing up.

Re-test

What you charge when a repair triggers a second test.

Repair handoff

Parts and labor for a rebuild kit, valve replacement, or pressure-reducing valve repair. For a larger scope, hand it to the plumbing job pricing page.

Tax

Applied to the full ex-tax total.

How this is calculated

The quote is a straight build-up from the rates you enter. Every money box starts empty because the figures that circulate online are homeowner-facing cost aggregators, not a primary source. What the tool supplies is the structure and the arithmetic.

additionalTotal = additionalAssemblies x perAdditionalFee
filingFeeTotal  = filingFeePerReport x totalAssemblies
repairParts     = partsCost x (1 + markupPct / 100)
repairTotal     = repairParts + repairLabor
subtotal        = firstAssemblyFee + additionalTotal
                  + filingFeeTotal + tripCharge
                  + retestFee + repairTotal
tax             = subtotal x taxPct / 100
total           = subtotal + tax
perAssembly     = (subtotal - repairTotal - retestFee
                  - filingFeeTotal) / totalAssemblies

Worked example, the one the tests pin. A single-assembly test visit: $85 first assembly fee, no additional assemblies, $15 filing fee per report (1 report), $45 trip charge, no re-test, no repair, no tax. Subtotal = 85 + 0 + 15 + 45 = $145. Per-assembly revenue (excluding the pass-through filing fee) = (145 - 15) / 1 = $130.

The filing fee is a pass-through. It varies by jurisdiction: the calculator multiplies the per-report fee by the number of assemblies tested and passes it through at cost. It is excluded from the per-assembly revenue figure.

One visit, one assembly, one test

A backflow test is a single-purpose visit: a certified tester connects a gauge kit to the assembly, runs the test, records the result and files the report with the water authority. This calculator builds the quote for that visit from the lines the operator actually bills: a per-assembly test fee, a rate for each additional assembly on the same property, the filing fee passed through at cost, a trip charge for the drive, a re-test line when a repair triggers a second test, and a repair handoff for parts and labor that go beyond the test itself.

Every rate box starts empty on purpose. The figures that circulate online are homeowner-facing cost aggregators quoting each other, not a primary source, so this page ships no preset rates and asks for yours instead. What it supplies is the structure and the arithmetic.

The filing fee is a pass-through, not a markup line

The city or water-authority filing fee varies by jurisdiction. Because no single figure applies, the calculator treats it as a pass-through input: enter the fee your jurisdiction charges and it lands on the invoice at cost, never marked up. The page says so, and it asserts no fee.

The repair handoff is a separate line

When the test fails, the repair is a different scope. Parts and labor for a rebuild kit, a replacement valve or a pressure-reducing valve repair are entered on the repair handoff line, or sent to the plumbing job pricing calculator where the generic plumbing pricing structure covers them in full.

Certified-tester framing

The test is done by a tester certified under the local cross-connection control program. In Texas specifically, the tester credential is the Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) license, a TCEQ occupational license that requires a 40-hour course and a practical skills exam, separate from the irrigator or technician license. The Texas landscape irrigator license guide covers the state’s irrigator licensing path.

The irrigation repair and startup pricing calculator prices the startup visit, which includes a backflow recommissioning step but not the annual test. This page is the annual test.

Everything runs in your browser: no account, no email gate, nothing stored or sent. Estimate only, not a binding quote.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this calculator not suggest an average backflow test price?
Because no primary source publishes one. The figures that circulate online are homeowner-facing cost aggregators quoting each other. Under this site's cite-or-omit rule that means every rate box starts empty and the tool supplies the structure: a per-assembly test fee, a per-additional rate, the filing fee as a pass-through, a trip charge, a re-test line and a repair handoff.
Who can test a backflow assembly?
A tester certified under the local cross-connection control program. Certification requirements vary by state, county and water authority. This page does not list requirements by jurisdiction because they change; check with the water authority that issues the filing.
What is the city filing fee?
A fee the water authority or municipality charges for receiving and recording the test report. It varies by jurisdiction. Because the fee is set locally, this calculator treats it as a pass-through input you fill from your own filing, never as a default.
